THE China Coast Guard (CCG) has installed a floating barrier near the Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough Shoal) in the West Philippine Sea to keep out Filipino fishing vessels, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Sunday.

Bajo de Masinloc lies within the country's exclusive economic zone The PCG said a 300-meter-long barrier was deployed in the southeast portion of the shoal. The barrier was discovered by the PCG and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources personnel aboard the BRP Datu Bankaw during a routine patrol on Saturday.

Chinese maritime forces eventually occupied the shoal. The incident prompted the Philippine government to file a case against China before the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands in 2013.Manila contested the legality of Beijing's nine-dash line on which its claim over a vast portion of the South China Sea is based. In 2016, the court declared China's claim as invalid, at the same time upholding the sovereign rights of the Philippines in the area.
