Chinese scientists have allegedly developed a groundbreaking splittable drone system that could overwhelm enemy defense systems.

Chinese scientists have allegedly developed a new kind of modular splittable drone that can separate mid-flight into smaller, independent drones. The new drone system could swarm enemy airspace and confuse anti-drone and anti-aircraft defense systems if reports are true.

Developed by Professor Shi Zhiwei from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the new drone is the product of years of research in the field. However, thejournal. The paper states that the team has successfully overcome the challenge of designing a drone combination with nearly twice the flight efficiency of a similarly sized multirotor drone.

To achieve this, the team drew inspiration from an unlikely source—the maple seed. The seed’s unique structure, which includes a wing-like cotyledon that rotates around it, provides lift and allows it to hover or even ascend in windy conditions.Shi’s team proposes that maple-seed-inspired drones could be used in future warfare, especially for drone swarming. However, the challenge is to assemble them for efficient long-distance flight.

However, the combined splittable drone’s maximum flight speed was not comparable to some high-performance military drones. However, this might not matter as the combined drone’s role is simply getting into enemy airspace.
