A Philippine Coast Guard vessel was reportedly harassed by a China Coast Guard vessel using a long-range acoustic device (LRAD) in the disputed waters of the South China Sea. This incident marks the first known use of an LRAD by the Chinese coast guard in the region.

A China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel reportedly used a long-range acoustic device ( LRAD ) to harass a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ship patrolling the coastline of Zambales on Saturday. Commo. Jay Tarriela, PCG spokesman for the West Philippine Sea, said on Sunday that the LRAD was used by CCG 3103 on the BRP Cabra. The crew of the Cabra said they heard a loud, piercing sound from the CCG 3103.

Tarriela stated that this marked the first instance of the Chinese coast guard utilizing the LRAD, which can project powerful sound waves over considerable distances. It is typically employed for crowd control and can generate sound levels capable of inducing pain and potentially causing hearing damage. Tarriela explained that the Cabra had 'successfully pushed back' Chinese ships that had been sailing too close to the Zambales coast, maneuvering them to a distance of 90 to 95 nautical miles. He added that PCG vessels persistently issued radio challenges to the intruding ships.Tarriela emphasized that these challenges were not mere routine procedures but 'firm assertions' that the actions of the CCG violated the Philippine Maritime Zones Act, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos), and the 2016 Arbitral Award. The latter ruling decisively refutes China's expansive claims in the South China Sea. The Chinese coast guard has been actively attempting to maintain a presence in Philippine waters. Recently, CCG 3304 was relieved by CCG 3103. Accompanying the CCG 3103 is the CCG-5901, often referred to as the 'monster ship' due to its substantial size
