Strangulation was the cause of Lopez-Garcia’s death, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office. She also had sharp-force injuries to the head and neck area.
“We’re just, like, in this limbo of red tape,” Garza said. “I think there’s just no real process in place to accommodate these rare situations.” The same complications related to the children’s custody are creating barriers for their access to mental health resources, Garza said. Still, she knows there is only so much her employer can do, and her ability to support the children is thinning with no immediate resolution in sight. AHer 14-year-old niece recently told her she wants to lay in her mother’s bed so she can smell her scent before it fades. Her nephew wants to cuddle with his Chocolate Labrador named Coco and his pet bunny.
She said her sister was finding new confidence in her life after getting out of a long-term abusive relationship with Gomez.
