Lunar New Year celebrations kicked off in Chicago over the weekend, but celebrators said they refused to live in fear after a gunman killed 10 and injured 10 others in Monterey Park, California, on Saturday night.
“I wouldn’t say we are pins and needles, but we’re all very much aware and alert,” Lee said.
Tommy Wong, center, of the Hui-Ting Association, helps Kenmond Xavier Eng, 5, left, and Aryanna Eng, 6, present a gift to the lions along South Wentworth Avenue in Chinatown on Feb. 21, 2021, to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The Year of the Ox was inaugurated with lion dances throughout the neighborhood instead of the traditional parade due to the pandemic.
“We feel confident with our safety plan, and to move forward with this joyful event in a safe environment. We invite the whole city to come out,” said Sigcho-Lopez.
