Charles Leclerc outduels Max Verstappen in Austria.
At the halfway marker of the 2022 Formula 1 season, we've seen the beginnings of a year of runs. First, Charles Leclerc took a dominant Ferrari and a little bit of Red Bull unreliability to build a huge lead on Max Verstappen and the field. Then, Verstappen rattled off wins while Ferrari reeled with their own reliability issues. That led Verstappen to his own massive lead.
Ferrari stuck to the same strategy for both of its cars and seemed set for a 1-2 when Carlos Sainz Jr. caught Verstappen after his final stop, but Sainz slowed on a straight just as he seemed ready to lunge for the position. That engine issue turned into a significant fire, forcing Sainz to retire from the race and handing second to Verstappen.
