Officer who shot teen fired for separate use of force incidents, teen’s charges dismissed pending investigationAKRON, Ohio - New developments in a case involving a 15-year-old who was shot by an Akron police officer last month. The Akron Police Department said it was due to two separate use of force incidents that are not related to the Koonce-Wiliams shooting.

Meanwhile, Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich announced that his office has requested the Summit County Juvenile Court dismiss a complaint against Koonce-Williams, pending the completion of a BCI investigation into the incident. The incident involving the teen’s shooting began when Akron police received a call that someone was walking down Newton Street pointing a gun at people’s homes.

Akron police officer Ryan Westlake took the call and his body cam video shows him arriving on scene, pulling up next to the teen. Westlake quickly pulls out his gun and shoots Koonce-Williams in the hand before he even gets out of his cruiser.“It’s a fake, it’s a fake,” Koonce-Williams can be heard saying frantically.“Shots fired, shots fired,” Westlake is heard as he radios dispatch.

Police charged Koonce-Williams with brandishing a replica firearm in the presence of a police officer. Now Kolkovich has dismissed those charges pending a BCI investigation. In a statement he wrote, “Pursuing charges at this time against Mr. Koonce-Williams could undermine the independence of BCI’s investigation,” Prosecutor Kolkovich said. “Charging decisions should only be made after the completion of a thorough review of the incident by independent investigators.”Copyright 2024 WOIO.
