Survivor in Brock Turner rape case says 'Rape is not a punishment for getting drunk'

Chanel Miller, the woman Brock Turner sexually assaulted in 2015, said in an interview aired Sunday that messages from other survivors helped heal shame from the rape and trial.

But after her 13-page victim impact statement went viral in June 2016, activists credited Miller with helping spark the #MeToo movement. The 27-year old with a literature degree revealed her identity earlier this month while preparing for the release of her memoir,"Know My Name," available Tuesday. Recalling online comments about the 2015 assault at Stanford University, Miller acknowledged she blacked out from drinking alcohol and addressed victim blaming. "Rape is not a punishment for getting drunk," she said in the interview with Bill Whitaker."And we have this really sick mindset in our culture, as if you deserve rape if you drink to excess. You deserve a hangover, a really bad hangover, but you don't deserve to have somebody insert their body parts inside of you.

Voters also recalled Aaron Persky, the judge who sentenced Turner, in June 2018 – making him the first California jurist recalled from the bench in 86 years.
