Carlos Cortez, who held the job less than two years, told the district board he needs to care for his ailing parents.
Less than two years after taking office, Carlos Cortez has resigned as chancellor of the San Diego Community College District to care for his parents.Monday that his mother recently had to undergo emergency triple bypass open heart surgery.
The district is composed of San Diego City College, Miramar College, Mesa College and San Diego College of Continuing Education. San Diego’s Jewish community, and some of the district’s faculty, objected to having Walker speak at the event. They claimed that Walker had expressed public support for David Icke, whom they believed had made demeaning remarks about Jewish people.
During a hallway interview with the Union-Tribune at the time, Cortez — a very high energy person — pulled aside three welding students and asked, “Did you know we have an apprenticeship program? Give me your email; I’ll tell you about it.” “Carlos is a gay Puerto Rican man who wants people to have the sort of life and opportunities that he’s had,” said“And what a life it is. A life driven by social justice.”
