Boston Celtics majority owner Wyc Grousbeck announced on Thursday that Boston could be in play for a WNBA team.
The idea of the WNBA coming to Boston is fascinating, but there is one significant hurdle. The Celtics do not own their home arena, TD Garden. The owner of the building is Delaware North, a hospitality and food service company based in Buffalo, New York.
"I've been open to it all along, except that it just doesn't work out as well if you don't own the building," he added. The timing also adds up, with Grousbeck also recently stating that the organization has been in pursuit of having the NBA All-Star game in Boston. The Golden State Warriors had recently been nearing an agreement to host the 2025 All-Star game and have also added their own WNBA expansion team. Grousbeck acknowledges that the team's hopes remain alive.
