CEBU CITY – Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma opposed the bill that seeks to legalize divorce in the country.

Palma appealed to the faithful to shun House Bill No. 9349 or the An Act Reinstituting Absolute Divorce as an Alternative Mode for the Dissolution of Marriage.“I appeal to all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Cebu to join hands in our effort to make it known that we do not accept divorce due to the damage it will inflict, not only on us Catholics, but on our values as a nation,” Palma said in a letter.

Palma echoed the opposition of some groups in Cebu such as the Human Life International and the Archdiocese of Cebu Commission on the Laity which insisted that divorce is not the solution to save troubled marriages. The prelate urged priests to be “more zealous in preparing couples for the lifelong union of marriage rather than just officiating the wedding ceremony.”

Fe Mantuhac-Barino, chairman of the AOC Commission on the Laity, has warned that mass actions will be taken to oppose the bill.
