Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia pledges to help fire victims return to Sitio Lower Galilee in Barangay Duljo Fatima. The City Government will work with landowners to ensure victims can rebuild their homes. The city also provided assistance to the family of 13-year-old Wrenchford Rey Cahan, who died in the fire.
VICTIMS of the fire that struck Sitio Lower Galilee, Barangay Duljo Fatima, Cebu City at dawn last Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025, may still be able to return to the area with the City Government’s intervention. In a press conference on Monday, Jan. 6, Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia said he tasked the Division for the Welfare of the Urban Poor (DWUP) to coordinate with the landowners since the affected area is private property.
“We will make representations through the DWUP regarding that matter to ensure that the fire victims can return to their homes. That includes allowing fire victims who lost their homes to rebuild. Because if you don’t allow them to return after a fire, it’s like giving private owners the green light to burn the homes of informal settlers that squat on their properties just so they can use the land. I don’t think that’s right,” he said in a mix of Cebuano and English.AssistanceThe Department of Social Welfare and Services shouldered all the expenses for the burial of the 13-year-old Wrenchford Rey Cahan, who died during the fire. The City also extended assistance to his family, Garcia said.“We took care of everything, including hospital expenses, burial and even food. We took care of everything,” Garcia said. Cahan was asleep and believed to have been trapped when the flames consumed the house he was in past 3 a.m..His remains were laid to rest last Monday at the Cebu Veterans Cemetery. The fire last Sunday destroyed 20 houses and damaged five others, displacing 30 families or 120 individuals. Damage estimates were placed at around P900,000
