Traditionally, RSV season begins in the fall and continues through the winter, similar to the flu and other respiratory viruses. Over the past four weeks, the three-week average of PCR test positivity for RSV in Florida has been above 5%, which exceeds the threshold of 3% typically seen at the start of the RSV season, the CDC said in a heath advisory.In Georgia, RSV-linked hospitalizations among those under age 4 have risen from 2.0 per 100,000 for the week ending Aug. 5 to 7.0 per 100,000 for the week ending Aug. 19, the CDC said.
"Historically, such regional increases have predicted the beginning of RSV season nationally, with increased RSV activity spreading north and west over the following 2-3 months," the agency wrote in its advisory.Bsip/Universal Images Group via Getty Images The CDC said it wants clinicians and caregivers to be aware of RSV because it can be particularly dangerous for babies, young children and older adults.
