Groomed in Miami and hardened by repeated playoff trips, Strus’ effect was tangible -- even though all the usual preseason qualifiers apply, and his final numbers were mundane. How many times during the regular season will Strus -- a career 37.1% long-range bomber -- make the defense pay for leaving him open? How many times will that help defender choose to stay connected to the lethal Strus instead, creating an easier finish for Garland?
Starting at power forward while Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff predictably tinkered with lineups and combinations in the absence of All-Star center Jarrett Allen , Strus finished with three points on 1 of 4 shooting -- all from beyond the arc -- in 15 minutes. Jones, the backup big and first player off the bench, was active underneath throughout the game. While Bickerstaff chose to go small against Atlanta, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Jones as Allen’s fill-in at various points during the preseason, allowing the Cavs to evaluate a bigger lineup around Garland, Mitchell and Strus -- the kind of look that got some run Tuesday night.
Incumbent starting small forward Isaac Okoro led all scorers with 19 points in 21 minutes off the bench. Okoro, who remains a work in progress on offense, repeatedly attacked the rim in the halfcourt and transition. He even knocked down a pair of 3s and canned all five of his free throws.
