Shares of Caterpillar Inc. CAT jumped 3.3% in premarket trading Thursday, after the the construction- and mining-equipment maker reported big profit and revenue beats, due to margin improvement, favorable price realization and higher sales volume. Net income rose to $1.94 billion, or $3.74 a share, from $1.54 billion, or $2.86 a share, in the year-ago period. Excluding nonrecurring items, adjusted earnings per share reached a record $4.91, well above the FactSet consensus of $3.80.
