Casino is one of Martin Scorsese's best and most praised works, but he has said that the movie has story but 'no plot' – and he's right.
Martin Scorsese is best known for his gangster movies, among them Casino, which even though was a critical and commercial success, Scorsese has said that it has “no plot”. In 1995, Martin Scorsese went back to the gangster and crime genre with Casino, based on the nonfiction book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas, by Nicholas Pileggi , which starred two of Scorsese’s biggest stars: Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, along with Sharon Stone, Don Rickles, and James Woods.

Casino's story begins with Sam being sent to Las Vegas to oversee the mob’s new hotel, but there’s no goal to achieve and the events in the movie are just a sequence of scenes with the characters reacting accordingly rather than being motivated by a goal. What’s shown in Casino, then, is how events happening affect Sam, Nicky, and Ginger , rather than seeing them on a journey to achieve something, so in that sense, Scorsese is right in admitting his movie has no plot but a lot of story.
Why Martin Scorsese’s Casino Having “No Plot” Isn’t Bad While it might sound scandalous to hear a director say that their own movie has no plot, that’s not always a bad thing. Casino isn’t the first nor the only movie without a plot, but what saves it from being a boring telling of events is the quality of said events and the complexity and development of the characters.
