Mayor Adams administration is quietly preparing to pad eight city agencies’ payrolls with so-called “decarbonization” czars who’ll pull in six-figure salaries.
The NYPD, NYC Health + Hospitals, and the departments of Education, Parks, Citywide Administrative Services, Cultural Affairs, Sanitation, and Correction will all get a “chief decarbonization officer.”The smoke czar overseeing public schools will be responsible for “implementing energy management and emissions reductions activities” across the DOE’s 1,400 buildings.
The initiative aims to meet goals for cutting greenhouse gas emissions outlined in a local law approved four years ago under then-Mayor Bill de Blasio. The new hires are each expected to haul in $170,000 yearly helping ensure the city’s operations and infrastructure “achieve 40% emissions reductions by 2025 and 50% reductions by 2030,” the job postings say.Councilman Robert Holden ripped the new positions, saying they’re a blatant waste of tax dollars.
