Brittany Kowalchuk said she's already been serving a greater emotional punishment, the loss of her partner, as she tearfully apologized to all involved.
A New York woman will serve a one year minimum term in Cumberland County Prison for causing the death of her boyfriend in a 2021 crash on Interstate 81 in Penn Township, south of Carlisle. Evidence suggests that the driver, Brittany Kowalchuk, was texting at the time.
Pennsylvania State Police said the Aug. 14, 2021 accident occurred about 10:30 a.m. when Kowalchuk lost control of her northbound Toyota Camry sedan. Her car struck an embankment off the right berm, flipped onto its roof and slid into a tree. In their investigation, police said they found evidence Kowalchuk was engaged in a text message thread in the moments leading up to the crash. Charging documents stated her phone showed one text that had just been sent, stating “yea driving call later,’ and a second unsent text stating, ‘ty.’
