Ann Telnaes, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, resigned from The Washington Post after her cartoon featuring Jeff Bezos was censored. Telnaes stated this was the first time her editorial freedom was compromised, marking a concerning trend for press independence.
Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Ann Telnaes announced her departure from The Washington Post after a cartoon featuring Post owner Jeff Bezos was rejected. Telneas said while she’s had differences with editors in the past, she’s “never had a cartoon killed because of who or what I chose to aim my pen at. Until now.
” The cartoon at issue depicted billionaire tech and media chief executives, including Facebook/META owner Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon CEO and Post owner Jeff Bezos, with bags of cash, kneeling before a statue of Donald Trump. “As an editorial cartoonist, my job is to hold powerful people and institutions accountable,” Telneas wrote. “For the first time, my editor prevented me from doing that critical job. So I have decided to leave the Post. Bezos and Zuckerberg, whose businesses have large contracts with the federal government, and others made trips to Mar-a-Lago to meet with Trump after his election. To be clear, there have been instances where sketches have been rejected or revisions requested, but never because of the point of view inherent in the cartoon’s commentary,” wrote Telneas. “That’s a game changer…and dangerous for a free press.', comes amid ongoing upheaval at the Post touched off by the departure of its top editor in a shake up in June 2024. In October at the presidential endorsement for Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris, led to several columnists and editorial board members leaving the paper and the loss of more than 200,000 subscribers.Telneas has received numerous awards for her editorial cartoons in various mediums. She won the Pulitzer Prize for her print cartoons in 2001
