We are less than week out from Memorial Day and for more than a decade a national non-profit has been walking across country to remember our nation’s fallen heroes. FOX 10 News caught up with those “Carrying the Load” in Pensacola on the East Coast Leg of this national relay.
Over the years, the mission has managed to raise more than $42 million to help veterans, first responders and their families.) - Twenty-three days in and the East Coast Leg of “Carry the Load” is now well underway. They call it “Memorial May” -- the remembrance walk started in 2011 by two Navy Seals wanting to bring back the true meaning of Memorial Day for veterans who’ve given their all.
Filled with veterans and volunteers the buses have been stopping along the way to walk together -- and along side every day people from communities as they make their way to Dallas, Texas for Memorial Day. “I’ve seen it change lives -- whether it’s people that we’re meeting with on our walks as we’re walking the country and sharing other people’s stories or sharing our own. I’ve seen it save lives and I’ve seen people heal right in front of me,” said Colson.
