The horse reportedly suffered a medical emergency on Thursday in the historic seaside city.
A carriage horse died on Thursday in Cape May after suffering a “medical catastrophe,” in a public setting, the carriage company said.“This has been very difficult for us. Ice was part of our family and not ‘just a horse,’” Cape May Carriage said in an emailed statement to NJ Advance Media on Friday. “This was sudden and unexpected. He was a very strong and healthy boy - our biggest horse standing 19 hands and 1800 pounds. We are all very upset at for the loss of our beloved horse.
Cape May Carriage noted that it was a cool evening in the city with many people around town wearing jackets. The National Weather Service said temperatures fell into the low 70s shortly before 9 p.m. Cape May Carriage said Ice is the first of its horses to die in this manner in its 41 years of business.“Though animal rights and the like-minded will claim carriage rides are cruel and the cause of this tragedy, nothing could be further from the truth,” the carriage company said on social media. “Carriage rides are easy work for these big horses and have nothing to do with what happened to Ice.”
Cape May Carriage offers private 15- and 30-minute tours of the historic resort city as well as holiday light tours during the Christmas season. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
