A key group of Democrats on Tuesday selected Rep. Carolyn Maloney to lead the House Oversight Committee, all but assuring that she will become the first woman to chair the panel in history.
Several Democrats said the endorsement from Clyburn — who is also the most powerful African American lawmaker in Congress — delivered a key boost to her candidacy. The Congressional Black Caucus, a tight-knit group that favors seniority in leadership races, had already signaled they will support Maloney.
Another senior member, Rep. Stephen Lynch , was also running for the position, but he did not make it to the runoff.as the House ramps up its impeachment probe into President Donald Trump. Some Democrats had worried that Maloney may not be the most effective messenger on impeachment, and had privately encouraged Connolly to run for the position, noting his experience on TV and his ability to punch back against GOP firebrands like Rep. Jim Jordan . Lynch, meanwhile, had touted his deep national security experience in his own candidacy bid.
