Former Astros star Carlos Correa will miss playoffs for just second time in career
Minnesota Twins' Carlos Correa reacts while batting during the first inning of a baseball game against the Kansas City Royals, Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, in Minneapolis. just five months after they finished last in the American League Central. Still, there was hope that Correa along with a young core would be enough for the Twins to return to the postseason. That dream officially was dashed Wednesday night when Correa and the Twins were mathematically eliminated from the postseason race.
The blame for Minnesota’s sub-.500 record certainly doesn’t lay at the feet of Correa, whose .287 average, .826 OPS and 21 home runs are all in line with his career numbers. Instead, the Twins have been a victim of bad luck with no other American League team having put as many players, including Correa himself, on the injured list this season.
Correa, who will miss the playoffs for just the second time in his eight-year big league career, is best known for his postseason heroics, with his. The shortstop won’t get to add to that total, but he did turn up his production as the Twins tried to battle their way back into the playoff picture. In September, Correa is hitting .347 with six home runs and 16 RBI in 25 games.
Correa’s three-year, $105.3 million contract, which gave him the highest annual salary of any infielder in history, includes an opt-out clause after each season which the 28-year-old is expected to use in order to hunt for another big contract this offseason. Like he did last offseason, Correa will join a crowded field of talented shortstops looking for new contracts, including Boston’s Xander Bogaerts, Atlanta’s Dansby Swanson and the Dodgers Trea Turner.
