A defensive gaffe leads to one Cardinals home run, second homer helps home team pull away in series opener
The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third but went down 2-1 moments later when a grounder up the middle that appeared it would end the bottom of the inning did not and Nolan Gorman followed with a two-run homer.
The Cardinals were leading 3-2 after six innings when the Padres had a runner in scoring position taken away on a reality-defying call that Manny Machado had impeded Molina, the Cardinals catcher. Machado, who had ducked to let Molina attempt a throw, stood up and immediately pointed to Molina, who was picking up a ball he had dropped well before Machado’s bat could have hit the glove.
“That situation, it changed the game,” Machado said. “I might have struck out on the next pitch. I might have homered. Then we’re bringing in our set-up man.” With one out in the third inning, Azocar hit a sinking liner into center field that Harrison Bader dove forward to try to grab. The ball caromed off his glove and bounced into open grass, allowing Azocar to reach second base standing up. That was it for Naughton, and Jurickson Profar lined a single to center off new pitcher Andre Pallante to make it 1-0.
