Registering a car in Texas can be a confusing maze for drivers to navigate, as annual registration costs are determined by a patchwork of fees that vary depending on the county where you live.
Harris is one of 17 counties in Texas that require an emissions test in addition to an annual safety inspection when registering a vehicle.
To make things more confusing, details about these costs are spread across the DPS website, the individual county tax assessor websites, and the TxDMV website. As of writing, the TxDMV also displayed out of date cost information, which the Houston Chronicle’s inquiry alerted them to fix. All counties in Texas can charge up to $10 in local fees for county bridge and road funds, and an additional $1.50 can be used to promote child safety programs – including health and nutrition education and school crossing guards.
Even though Harris County only charges $11.50 in local fees, it is one of the most expensive places to register a vehicle in the state largely due to the extra costs associated with mandatory emissions testing.
