Democrat Richard Ringer, a candidate for a Fayette County House seat, was attacked just days after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, FBI and other federal agencies issued a warning about candidates, election officials and the public facing a heightened risk of violence in the upcoming midterm elections.
Democratic candidate Richard Ringer who is running for the 51st state House District seat was assaulted outside his home on Monday morning. The attack follows two incidents of vandalism to his home - one involving a threatening message spraypainted on his garage door – all happening within three weeks of the Nov. 8 midterm election.
Because it was dark, Ringer said he couldn’t provide police with much of a description of the man. He also didn’t recall seeing a strange vehicle parked near his home. The incidents in Ringer’s Uniontown area neighborhood come as election officials around Pennsylvania and elsewhere brace for potential harassment and violence on Election Day.
A spokeswoman for Gov. Tom Wolf said all reports of intimidation or threats are taken very seriously and reported to the appropriate authorities. Dauphin County elections director Jerry Feaser said his team is ready to go on Election Day and is not anticipating any problems.
