When Alameda County made the worst kind of election error——in November’s election, it set off a series of very public missteps that took months to straighten out.

The county has been criticized for its management of elections before. In 2020, a broad coalition of groups interested in fair and free elections posted an open letter to County Registrar Tim Dupuis outlining the ways in which the county had failed to properly administer the November 2020 General Election.

“Trust in our electoral process is at the heart of our democracy,” District 5 Supervisor Keith Carson said in a statement after the oversight commission was approved by the board. “By establishing this commission, we are ensuring that this process will be more transparent and that issues impacting voting access and vote tabulation will be addressed and corrected.”

“From Supervisor Carson’s perspective, there’s a lot that our community could offer to the registrar to help them do their jobs better,” Shrago said. “This got on everyone’s radar. We need some oversight here.” Election integrity advocates acknowledge it’s a step forward. But they are quick to note that an oversight committee will not solve all of Alameda County’s problems on its own.
