Many California workers will soon receive five paid sick days per year thanks to a bill that Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Wednesday. Previously, state law guaranteed workers three paid sick days per year. Beginning in January 2024, Senate Bill 616 bumps that number up to five, and increases the amount of sick hours employees can accrue. In the past, employers could cap the number of accrued sick hours at 48 , but SB 616 increases that cap to 80 hours . The bill’s author, state Sen.
SB 616 allows employers to leave the traditional method of sick-hour accrual in place — one hour accrued for every 30 hours worked — but employers can now implement different accrual methods so long as employees gain 24 hours of sick leave by their 120th day of employment, and 40 hours by their 200th day of employment. The bill also increases the amount of accrued sick days that carry over year-to-year from three days to five.
