We asked the Franchise Tax Board if taxpayers need to prove they had storm damage in order to delay filing.
earlier this year extended the 2023 tax filing deadlines for most of California. Storms and ensuing weather damage prompted the Federal Emergency Management Administration to declare most California counties disaster zones because of weather damage in late 2022 into early 2023.And of course, that prompted questions from readers who want to know why their accountants insist they file before the original April 18 deadline. We reached out to the FTB for some clarity.
Q: Because we live in Orange County, I thought we would automatically have our deadline extended until Oct. 16. But my accountant tells me I have to file by April 18, unless I can prove to the IRS that I have been adversely affected by the rains and “disasters,” and I request an extension.
