The first McDonald’s location is long gone, but its address lives on thanks to a bizarre museum filled with old Happy Meal toys.
Deep in California’s Inland Empire, a faded, formerly purple Grimace sits in the Southern California sun, flanked by odd amusement park castoff pieces and a wild-eyed Hamburglar stuffed behind yellow bars. The collection sits hot against the stucco exterior of a low-slung building in the heart of San Bernardino, California, an hour east of Los Angeles, welcoming the curious to the First Original McDonald’s Museum.
There are black-and-white images strung up high around one edge of the open room, tracking the address through its storied history and its many buildings. Below are old worker-worn outfits, replica menus of the original barbecue restaurant, and endless plush dolls from the Ronald McDonald era and well before. It’s an overwhelming amount of color to take in all at once, all set against a carpet so purple that it gives the faded Grimace outside fits.
