California's Reparations Task Force called on the state legislature to cancel child support debt for black residents.
In its nearly 1,100-page report released last week, the group suggested eliminating interest on past-due child support and back debt on the payments. The report claims these laws are"discriminatory" and have"torn African American families apart."
The plan would eliminate the debt and only require black child support payers to provide the principal. "A disproportionate number of African American parents are saddled with crushing debt that hinders their ability to attend school or job training, maintain housing, and find employment if their professional licenses and/or driver’s licenses have been suspended because of the failure to pay child support debt," it claims.
