The Department of Agriculture recognizes the efforts of the farmers and fisherfolk who both work hard to ensure enough food supply. ManilaBulletin

Regional Director Angel B. Encarnacion made the statement during the kick-off ceremony for this year’s celebration of Farmers and Fisherfolk Month at the MIS Hall on Tuesday, May 2.

Anchored on the theme “Masaganang Agrikultura, Maunlad na Ekonomiya,” the event started with a fun walk around the Regional Government Center before the opening program at the MIS Hall. The celebration was highlighted with an Ivatan fisherfolk named Rogelio G. Doplito, 52, of Basco, Batanes becoming this year’s “Mangingisdang Direktor” .

It has been a tradition since 2005 that the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources designates a Mangingisdang Direktor to “further dramatize and popularize fisherfolk empowerment and participation as government partners.” The practice is also aimed at recognizing the vital role of the farmers and fisherfolk as backbone in the government’s poverty alleviation program.
