Bulgaria's PM-designate Kiril Petkov, whose new anti-graft party won general elections last month, said on Saturday he hoped to take office on Monday as the head of a four-party coalition, ending months of political deadlock in the poorest EU country.
Announcing his cabinet, Harvard graduate and former entrepreneur Petkov, 41, said he would "not lose a minute" in getting his cabinet approved by parliament.
A burly former fireman and bodyguard with a karate black belt, he had faced massive anti-corruption protests in 2020. "We have already announced the tasks and policies in the coalition agreement itself, we will expect the ministers to be efficient.... The stability of the coalition government will be a function of how well each of these ministers is doing their job," the affable Petkov told journalists on Saturday.
Cultural anthropology professor Ivaylo Dichev also praised "the young and positive faces" that would enter his cabinet in contrast with the "characteristic threatening expressions" of Bulgarian politicians before.
