One-by-one, the people enter, scrambling to locate and awkwardly strap on their mandatory COVID face masks. One-by-one, they then wait with bated breath for what will happen next.
I had been in courtrooms before. I find them fascinating places, full of raw drama, but this was the first time I knew the defendant. I met him on Canadian Idol when he was 19. Some didn’t last long. There was the guy who pulled a knife on another contestant in the middle of the night at their hotel. There was the wannabe singer who stole money from another participant. There was the talented fellow who made it all the way to the Top 10 before people started noticing he wasn’t changing his clothes, and only briefly slept in chairs after drinking all night. Surely, he couldn’t handle fame; we hoped he wouldn’t win.
He was wearing torn-up jeans and a shirt with the sleeves cut off. Apparently, he’d been dragged to the audition after work by his adoring high school sweetheart, who eventually became his first wife. He had one of those looks where, depending on what angle you viewed him, either resembled a goblin or a matinee idol, like a lot of iconic singers. Piercing eyes. Vibrant hair. A distinctive lip ring that gave him this instant edge.
He soon made it all the way to the Top 10. Week after week, he consistently raised the bar, finding lines, breezing past them. He’d purposely downplay what his plan was during rehearsals. That way, it would be a surprise — even for the crew — what he would do once we actually went live. This was also something no one had ever dared do before.Article content
He’d often come into the writers’ room, where there was always a guitar, and spontaneously serenade us with an acoustic song, like Radiohead’s Street Spirit . When one of the other writers brought in a synthesizer, he swept in to play some original Hedley songs. He played an early version of Gunnin’ that was deep, haunting, and indisputably accomplished.
There was the CTV party where I heard he got rip-roaring drunk and embarrassed the whole network brass. I insisted it was probably a stunt, like Ozzy Osbourne biting the head off a dove at a soiree. Self-aware. For the press. Surely it couldn’t be that he was already off the rails. On another evening, my wife and I bumped into another competitor we’d met in Season 2. We asked if he’d heard how Jacob was doing, and his answer made me cringe. My early confidence that this guy was going to be fine was looking pretty shaky.
