“It’s a huge problem when you have older adults who need to get to medical appointments if they need to be able to safely evacuate a building,” Walz said. “But they also need to go out into the community to see friends or family.” The Haddington building is beset by other problems — water-damaged ceilings, exposed floor drains, and a broken ventilator in the windowless hallways of the building.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development subsidizes 70% of the rent for each unit at Haddington, while residents pay the other 30%.
