Brittney Griner’s American choice | Opinion
Griner has long faced unfair criticism from the right for her political protest, her arrest and the work that was done to free her. Now, she faces not only the schadenfreude of the right but unreasonable voices on the left slamming her for a gesture of gratitude that is entirely appropriate.
It’s possible to maintain a complex understanding of our own history and to view it in different ways during different times. Griner’s shift demonstrates an admirable willingness to change her own perspective and expression. “You have a right to be able to speak out, question, to challenge, and do all these things. [After] what I went through, it just means a little bit more to me now. I was literally in a cage and could not stand the way I wanted to … and a lot of other situations. Just being able to hear my national anthem, see my flag, I definitely wanted to stand.”
