Despite making par on each of his first four holes, Tiger Woods fell apart in the middle of his round.
Dan KilbridgePORTRUSH, Northern Ireland – It is unusual to see Tiger Woods 15 yards behind Patrick Reed in the fairway when hitting driver. It is unusual to see Woods fail to advance the ball more than 30 yards out of the rough.
“I’m just not moving as well as I’d like,” Woods said. “Unfortunately, you’ve got to be able to move and, especially under these conditions, shape the golf ball. And I didn’t do it. I didn’t shape the golf ball at all. Everything was left-to-right. And I wasn’t hitting it very solidly.” There’s a big difference between playing hurt and playing injured, and Woods has not alluded to the latter. He admitted to plenty of soreness and said it’s worse on his off weeks. But it all caught up to him in his first competitive round since the U.S. Open, one that included just one birdie and a slew of mistakes.
He was clearly frustrated but never blew up, often walking ahead of playing partners Reed and Matt Wallace, alone in silence, after being first to play his approach shot. The wheels started coming off on an ugly stretch at Nos. 6-7, beginning with a double-bogey at the par-3 sixth. It took him four shots just to get the ball within 100 yards of the green at the par-5 sixth hole, slowly advancing the ball out of the rough one hack at a time.
The weird thing is that Woods smiled often and laughed during his post-round news conference. He’s been in noticeably good spirits all week. And he made fun of himself after the day’s lone highlight, a long birdie make at the par-4 15th hole, his only circle on the card.
