There were some head-scratching picks on Night 1 of the 2023 NFLDraft. Brentley12 breaks them down and tries to make sense of them.
The Lions were in a pivotal spot in this year’s draft as they were picking at No. 6 overall and many analysts had them as a potential landing spot for Jalen Carter. They elected to pass on Carter and trade back to No. 12, where selecting Gonzalez or a pass rusher such as Lukas Van Ness or Myles Murphy would have made a ton of sense. Instead, the Lions shocked the world and select a running back in Alabama’s Gibbs.
I don’t have a problem at all with Gibbs—he was a top-ten player on my board—but I do have issues with the Lions taking a running back with the needs they have on their roster and the fact that their backfield is already in good shape. The teamDavid Montgomery to pair up with D’Andre Swift, so adding Gibbs here does feel redundant, even if he is ultra-talented.
The Campbell pick is also a surprise. I liked Campbell quite a bit and did see him as the best linebacker in the class. I just am shocked he went 18th. I thought Campbell’s sweet spot would have been somewhere between picks 35-50, but the Lions must have felt like he was too good to risk losing out on. I am not going to hate on this pick as I know Campbell will start from day one and be productive, but I don’t really love the value.
