Boris Johnson leads in contest to become Britain’s next prime minister after securing 114 of 313 votes cast in first round by Conservative lawmakers
Conservative MP Boris Johnson speaks during his Conservative Party leadership campaign launch in London on June 12, 2019.
Johnson thanked supporters and tweeted, "I am delighted to win the first ballot, but we have a long way to go." Johnson vowed on Wednesday that as prime minister he would "get Brexit done," either by renegotiating May's rejected Brexit deal or by leaving the EU on October 31 without an agreement. The second round is due on June 18 with further ballots planned for June 19 and June 20 until there are just two candidates.
