Boris Johnson promised a 'new, better' Brexit deal in his 1st speech as U.K. Prime Minister
New Prime Minister Boris Johnson waves from the door of Number 10, Downing Street after speaking to the media: Boris Johnson has pledged to “restore trust in our democracy” as he repeated his leadership campaign promise to leave the European Union by October 31 with “no ifs, no buts” in his first speech as Britain’s Prime Minister—an approach which has already triggered several ministerial resignations.
However, Johnson said he wants to create a “warm and affectionate” friendship with the EU. He also promised to make certain the status of 3.2 million EU citizens living and working in the U.K. The former mayor of London hinted he would withhold $50 billion Britain owes to the EU if it exits the union. Johnson added that it would instead be used as"lubrication" in the event of a no-deal Brexit, which he is prepared to carry out.
Cabinet ministers Penny Mordaunt, James Brokenshire, Liam Fox, Chris Grayling, Greg Clark, Karen Bradley and Damian Hinds were among those sacked within the first few hours to make way for Johnson's"Johnson’s journey toward Buckingham Palace was interrupted by Greenpeace protesters holding “climate emergency” banners. The demonstrators, who barricaded The Mall, were pushed out of the way by police officers.
