The first-ever Boo Bash featured games, candy, a kids' costume contest and a Disney villain-themed drag queen performance
Inside Pride Square on Normal Street, Saturday’s Boo Bash had all the fixtures and festivities of an average Halloween carnival. But for many families who were among the roughly 900 attendees, this autumn event was special.
Moehlig said she hasn’t seen a large-scale event like this for families, so her team was excited to offer one to San Diegans. Moehlig said they also aimed to make Boo Bash inclusive with the addition of an American Sign Language interpreter for programs on stage and a sensory area for neurodivergent people.
“Although we go to all kinds of other Halloween and holiday events, one specifically in a safe space for our kids to see their community — for my kid to see their community, and to be highly visible and bring their whole selves to an event — is really special. In the afternoon, drag queen Mariam T sat on stage in a sparkly purple evening gown to read “Red: A Crayon’s Story,” to the audience. The book is about being true to yourself and following your own path despite obstacles. Expecting protesters, organizers had called for volunteers to stand at the entrance to welcome families and serve as a buffer, Moehlig explained. At the event entrance on University Avenue, about 125 people stood together to form what organizers called a human “wall of love.”
