Director Bong Joon-ho promised to 'drink tonight until next morning' after his dark satire made history by clinching the best picture award at the Oscars, sending social media into a frenzy.
: “Parasite has dealt a much-needed slap to the American film industry’s narcissism, its long-standing love affair with itself, its own product and its own image. It has startled the academy into recognizing that no country’s cinema has a monopoly on greatness—no small thing at a time when trumped-up nationalism and xenophobia have a way of seeping into our art no less than our politics.
Meanwhile, it was tipped to win the coveted best picture award after it took home the SAG award for Outstanding Performance In A Cast, a prize which is often a precursor to Oscars success. Bong Joon-ho also won the Palme D’Or at Cannes last year, becoming the first Korean director to do so.: With a majority of white nominees in its big four acting categories, the Oscars this year had initially been overshadowed by its lack of diversity.
