The Greyhounds scored on their first two shots in the first eight minutes — a Joe Ballenger score from the right flank that curved in near post and Kelly’s first goal when he finished Ballenger’s cross through traffic. Among them are both players who accounted for the goals that day — Ballenger and senior midfielder Jess Gonzales.
“It’s working out so far,” Ballenger said of the new role. “I like to score goals now, so that’s the best part of it.” La Vernia managed to break on the scoreboard — a rarity against Boerne these days — with a score from Cameron Martinez that made it 4-1 in the final minute of the first half.
