Toronto BlueJays pitcher Anthony Bass has been removed from the team's roster following an apology he gave last month over a Christian video he shared supporting boycotts against BudLight and Target.
Bass's removal from the team's roster was announced Friday in a social media post from the team's official account. The post states that Bass had been"designated for assignment," a term used in Major League Baseball when a player is immediately removed from the team's lineup.
Bass's removal comes shortly after it was announced that he would be the catcher for the ceremonial first pitch on Friday night when the Blue Jays play against the Minnesota Twins. Bass would have received the pitch from leZlie Lee Kam, a prominent LGBT activist, according to the Toronto Sun. Bass, 35, came under fire in May after sharing a video discussing the Biblical reasons why Christians should boycott companies pushing pride-themed content on consumers. He then issued an apology, which was filmed and posted on the Blue Jays Twitter account.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER
"I recognize, yesterday, I made a post that was hurtful to the Pride community, which includes friends of mine, close family members of mine, and I am truly sorry for that," Bass told the media."I just spoke with my teammates and shared with them my actions yesterday, and I apologized with them, and, as of right now, I am using the Blue Jays' resources to better educate myself to make better decisions moving forward.
The Blue Jays game against the Twins is being held while the Toronto team is hosting a Pride Weekend celebration, which is being held on Friday and Saturday.
