LAFC defeats ATXFC 4-2 in final home game of season
Austin FC’s MLS Cup Playoff hopes came to an abrupt and definitive end Saturday night as the Verde and Black watched – andis about all they could do – LAFC and golden boot leader Denis Bouanga run up four unanswered goals at Q2 Stadium en route to a 4-2 defeat in the final home game of the season.
The defending MLS Cup champions got the scoring started early as Bouanga collected his seventh assist of the season, setting up Timothy Tillman’s strike from the center of the penalty box in the 13th minute. It got no better for Austin after the halftime break as Bouanga pounced on an error by Julio Cascante for an easy finish and his 19th of the season. Then in the 68th minute, ATX keeper Brad Stuver denied Bouanga’s attempt at a hat trick only to see the rebound trickle to the feet of Olivera, whose one-touch finish into the open net made it 4-0 in favor of the Black and Gold.
“Difficult night, disappointing result, obviously disappointing season in a lot of ways,” ATX head coach Josh Wolff said. “Certainly a huge disappointment missing out on the playoffs. It’s a frustrating thing for all of us, the staff, the players, the organization, certainly the fans, and understandably so. Big ambitions and big hopes and, you know, the year didn’t play out the way that we like.”
