The search for a man in Bloomington's sewer system ended about 5 p.m. when officers using a police dog took him into custody in an underground tunnel.
A man's descent into Bloomington's storm sewer system on Tuesday to elude police caused a 7-hour ordeal that closed a major downtown road, locked down an elementary school, evacuated an IU classroom building, altered bus routes and kept police busy.
Because of the violent acts at the park and the rifle threat, BPD's Critical Incident Response Team came to search for the suspect. City utilities department personnel arrived with diagrams of the underground storm drain system connected to a box culvert where the man went underground.There was a large underground area to be searched, so members of the Indiana State Police Special Weapons and Tactics team were called in to help.
"The man initially stated that he would to exit the storm sewer on the north end, but then attempted to flee back to the southwest further into the storm sewer after destroying the camera," the news release said.
