Black History Month began as Negro History Week in February 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson.

The annual celebration, which highlights the achievements of African Americans, evolved out of Negro History Week, the brainchild of historian Carter G. Woodson.

Carter G. Woodson, a founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History organization, first came up with the idea of the celebration that became Black History Month. Among other leaders, Lincoln and Douglass have been praised within the Black community for their accomplishments. In 1862, Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which engineered the end of slavery. Douglass was a national leader of the abolitionist movement. When did the celebration expand from a week to a month?

With the Black Health and Wellness theme, the ASALH noted how Black people throughout history have embarked on "self-determination, mutual aid and social support initiatives" to build certain community clinics, hospitals and medical and nursing schools.
