Two bills that seek to ban instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity and restrict student access to sexually explicit materials without parental notification have won passage in the state Senate.now go to the House of Representatives for consideration but if they pass that chamber and reach Gov. “These bills would create a hostile environment for LGBTQ youth, drive teachers from the field under the threat of lawsuits and create a wedge between students and the people they learn from and rely on – counselors, nurses and teachers,” states a letter from the 300 organizations and individuals such as the Education Law Center, American Civil Liberties Union, Pennsylvania State Education Association, among others. “These bills will undermine the ability of students to learn and thrive.
Sen. Doug Mastriano, R-Franklin County, called the measure common sense legislation aimed at protecting minors. Sen. Maria Collett, D-Montgomery County, said public schools were built to teach children in age-appropriate ways about different types of families and people. She said this legislation could drive teachers out of the profession or to other states “where they won’t be in constant fear of prosecution or persecution.”
