A measure that seeks to improve the literacy rate of Filipinos was approved on third and final reading by the House of Representatives on Tuesday, March 21. ManilaBulletin

House Bill No. 7414, which seeks to rename the Literacy Coordinating Council into the National Literacy Council in a bid to improve the country's literacy rate, gets approved on third and final reading.

“Many of us, especially the poor in rural and remote communities, lack the means to acquire formal education. We have to reach out to these sectors of our population so that at least, they will learn how to read and write,” he said. The body, which will have expanded membership and support mechanisms shall be attached to the Department of Education .

Among its other functions, the council would be tasked to evaluate the literacy situation in the country, propose ways and means for expanding educational opportunities to citizens, and adopt modern communications and educational technology and other innovative modes of transmitting knowledge to support literacy programs at the national and local levels.
