A public funeral service for businessman and philanthropist B.J. “Red” McCombs is drawing a large crowd of family, friends and admirers to the Tobin Center this morning. Watch it live.
A half hour after its doors opened, the 1,900-seat Tobin Center was nearly filled with people who’d lined up early for a chance to pay their respects to Red McCombs, a businessman and philanthropist who changed San Antonio. Overflow seating was being offered. He died Feb. 19 at 95.
She recalled how the McCombs brothers looked so much alike that, when McCombs’ daughter Connie and Paula McComb’s daughter Jennifer were little, they often mistook the two.Professional photographer Al Rendon said he has photographed McCombs many times since the early ‘90s, both for the Express-News and, after leaving the paper years ago, as a freelancer hired to record family or other events.
In the early 1950s, Clarkson’s father Robert Clarkson convinced McCombs to forget about going to law school and instead sell cars with him in Corpus Christi, telling him, “Come work with me at Mr. Hemphill’s car dealership and you can sell cars and trucks in the morning and shoot pool and drink beer all afternoon.”McCombs often said Austin Hemphill was his first and only boss.
Now a business owner and chef, Galloway said McCombs was his inspiration. He carried a photo showing him shaking McCombs’ hand and another of a tie he made that’s festooned with logos affiliated with McCombs business ventures.
